Which domestic roller shutter works for me ?

A roller shutter project may seem daunting for the avergae DIY'er, however we're here to help with guides on everything from ordering to installation. Contrary to popular belief, carrying out this type of project yourself is straightforward and you can save a lot of money! The process starts with selecting the appropriate roller shutter type for your application.

Use A: For buildings in construction

Use B: For existing buildings

A. Roller shutters intended for buildings in construction

The mechanism is installed in a cavity above the window or door, inside the building. This is the TRADITIONAL type Roller Shutter.

Technical constraints

A reservation must be accounted for in the masonry during construction. This is a slot which allows free movement of the slat curtain from the outside to the inside and vice versa depending on the opening/closing manipulation (the formwork of the mechanism in which the shutter is rolled up is internal). By opting for this type of shutter, you will receive all the components of the shutter, apart from the formwork which must be constructed by you (or your builder), depending on your interior configuration. A space of 5cm in the formwork around the rolled up shutter is recommended. Use wooden planks, their smooth texture makes it easy to apply layers of paint for aesthetic integration.

On the insulation side, the interior walls are to be lined with insulation to reduce thermal bridges and noise pollution as much as possible. Finish by applying an expansive joint at the junctions of the boards and you're done.

The mechanism is installed in a box hidden in the thickness of the wall.
This is the Domestic Roller Shutter TUNNEL type.

Technical constraints

The box specifically adapted to this installation must be inserted into the masonry when raising the walls. Access to the mechanism will be through a hatch below the lintel of the window. You can choose the direction of the roller/slats.

B. Roller shutters intended for an existing building

The mechanism is installed in a self-contained, visible box. This is the RENOVATION type roller shutter.

This option is the ideal solution for existing buildings where no further work is required or wanted to install the roller shutter. Easy to install and adaptable to several different configurations.
AvosDim RENOVATION type roller shutters are available in 3 installation models which can be chosen according to the requirements of the space:

Recess/reveal fit model with « outward » roller

  • renovation-roller-shutter-type-reveal-fit-inward.jpg

Reveal/recess fit model with « inward » roller

Surface mounted model with « outward » roller

How to make the best choice?

The choice is made either by technical constraint, according to the configuration you have and its requirements, or more freely according to your aesthetic preferences.

Here are some of our recommendations:

  • For relatively small windows or to maintain optimum brightness: It is essential to avoid cluttering the glass surface. Free up the window frame by opting for the wall-mounted model. Box and guide channels follow the contours of the frame. Check the space you have to install them beforehand!
  • For window reveals with the same or more depth as the box: you can recess/reveal fit with an "inward" roller. The guide channels of this shutter require lateral fixing in the frame. If the box is too deep, these can't be fixed, which makes the installation of the product technically unfeasible. Do you want recessed? Select the "outward" roller recess/reveal fit. The guide tracks that support the shutter box are fixed tight to the frame allowing the box to be proud of the reveal.
  • For the curved side of the slats to face outwards: the shutter orientation must be "inward" facing roller box exclusively. This is because the slats roll around the rotating tube axis present in the trunk, dictating the direction that the slats can be facing.

Do you want to completely replace a roller shutter? Observe our explanations and diagrams to identify what you have, all you have to do is choose the same!
