On a Renovation type retro-fit external domestic shutter, the spring is placed on the right (seen from the inside) if the rolling direction is outwards. If rolling inwards (Renovation or Traditional) the spring is on the left viewed from inside.

The spring is very easy to replace in the roller tube. The direction and spring-side must be preserved to avoid complications. It is fixed to the support easily. If the compensating spring needs tightening, turn the roller tube in the appropriate direction while holding firmly. The slat curtain can then be re-attached to the roller tube.
